New Discoveries

Since the discovery of the double helix configuration of DNA in 1953, the world has become increasingly aware of the exponential growth in medical and biological knowledge. But we have only just begun to scratch the surface!

Genome Alberta supports research in the new Life Sciences disciplines of genomics and proteomics - the studies of an organism's DNA and proteins. We are Alberta's leading source of funding and information in the international quest to use these tools in the discovery of new ways to combat disease and improve the productivity and quality of life for humans, animals and plants.

Our educational institutions, research organizations, governments, and corporate partners collaborate in world-class programs of investigation, exploration, and research. Using the most sophisticated technologies available, each participant contributes to our advances in fundamental genomics science.

For example, Genome Alberta is very involved in supporting Bioinformatics - the development and provision of advanced hardware, software and expert support, that can enhance computer analysis and display of complex biological structures and even provide a 4-D cave-like exploration of the inside of the human body

Another team of Alberta researchers is a world leader in transplant biology and the study of organ and graft rejection. They are developing advanced diagnostic tools to help with early treatment of organ rejection and, of course, to improve of the recipient's ongoing quality of life.

Yet another team of Alberta researchers, computer scientists and clinicians are developing the new field of metabolomics (the study of small molecules that arise from the metabolism of cells and tissues) that has health applications including pre-clinical drug trials, toxicology, transplant monitoring, newborn screening and clinical chemistry.

Genome Alberta, with our research partners and collaborators, has created and supported research opportunities that have made remarkable strides in unravelling many mysteries in human health, agriculture, forestry, and technology development. Our world-class researchers and technicians are leading the way to even greater discoveries that will benefit mankind, today and for future generations.
