Canadians want action to manage Chronic Wasting Disease

COVID-19 has dominated science news over the last 2 years, but we have not lost focus of some other serious problems such as Chronic Wasting Disease. The pandemic has increased awareness of animal to human transmission of diseases and of the growing evidence that people are sending diseases into the wildlife population.
Ellen Goddard is a professor in the Faculty of Environmental Life and Environmental Sciences at the University of Alberta and has been part of our funded work on CWD. The disease is spreading through cervids (elk, moose, or white-tailed deer) in North America at an alarming rate and a co-ordinated effort to manage the problem is needed.
Ellen’s latest work has involved gauging public attitudes on managing the fatal disease – sometimes called zombie deer disease.
This is part 1 of her conversation with freelance broadcaster Don Hill, where she talks about the ongoing research into CWD and her study on "Public preferences for options to manage chronic wasting disease in Canada" which was recently published in Science Direct: Environmental Science & Policy.
